Our practice of Shorinji-ryu teaches a wide variety of self-defense skills. Those include Okinawan empty hand karate and weapons, tai-chi, chi kung, ba gua and aiki jiu-jitsu. You will learn how these arts work together and reflect our fundamental principles of Shorinji-ryu. Our goal is to build your skills and self confidence. As Hanshi Sanford says “bad guys will read you before approaching - if you seem like a hard target, they will leave you alone”
The seminar will cover these topics:
Your self-defense resources: How do you create the crashing wave?
Your technique: How does your crashing wave disrupt your opponent?
Staying fresh: How to embed these principles and practices in your training and life?
The seminar will deliver immediately useful hands-on experience. Specific techniques you will learn include:
Principles
Rooting, dropping and gravity to reduce vulnerability
Moving from your center using ba gua
Sensing hands to improve awareness
Self-defense applications
Continuity of joined forces for kicks and punches
Rooting and dropping for more effective aiki jiu-jitsu
Application to kata
Application to weapons (time permitting)
4th degree black belt, Senpai Al Morgan, will lead this free seminar. Open to all Adult Students and Youth Students rank green belt and up (with instructor approval).
